PANEL: App Assessment Framework and Library - Learnings from NL
Time
11:40 AM - 12:20 PM (EST)
Description

This presentation will highlight an innovative approach to improving digital mental health care by launching an app library of mental health, substance use, and addictions app that have been vetted through the Mental Health Commission of Canada Mental Health App Assessment Framework. . It will give an overview of the App Assessment Framework, the core standards, and Newfoundland and Labrador’s experience launching their unique library of Mental Health and Addictions Apps that have passed the framework. The developer of an app assessed on the MHCC framework will also share their perspective on the improvements their app has undergone as a result of the assessment. The Digital App Assessment Framework has been developed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC), with support from the Organization for the Review of Care and Health Apps (ORCHA), and provides an assessment based on seven standards. These include: Data and privacy, Clinical evidence, Clinical safety, User-ability and accessibility, Security and technical stability, Cultural safety, social responsibility, and equity; and Enhanced data sovereignty. These domains ensure that apps meet high standards for safety, effectiveness, and inclusivity, which are important to consider in an era of rapidly expanding digital health tools and apps. The MHCC, ORCHA, and The Department of Health and Community Services, Mental Health and Addictions Division in Newfoundland and Labrador have played a key role in collaborating to support app developers through the assessment process. This initiative can help the public in Newfoundland and Labrador navigate the existing digital health space and find apps that are safe, evidence-based, ethical, and equitable.
