Description

Digital mental health and nature-based therapy may seem worlds apart, yet both aim to reduce barriers, increase timely access, and offer effective alternatives for those underserved by conventional care.

Modern life has disconnected many from the natural world, contributing to loneliness, diminished well-being, and a lack of belonging. This disconnection not only harms humans—it is tied to environmental degradation and other social determinants of health. People who feel connected to the Earth are more likely to act as stewards. Nature-based therapy restores this reciprocity, promoting healing for both humans and ecosystems.

Human-Nature Counselling Society (HNCS), a national leader in implementation, has shown how these approaches reduce stigma, engage hard-to-reach populations, and provide culturally responsive care, including with Indigenous communities.

This presentation explores the promise of hybrid digital–nature approaches, including apps, virtual guided nature experiences, and online training for crisis teams, to expand access, foster resilience, and improve mental health outcomes—demonstrating scalable, equitable, and innovative solutions for global mental health.
