Description

For over four decades, Sri Lanka has endured numerous crisis, from a brutal ethnic civil war, violence insurrection and counter-insurgency, a tsunami disaster, ethno-religious violence, the COVID-19 pandemic and a devastating economic crisis, each which have caused deep and cumulative impacts on their survivors. In response to this profound human suffering, communities and practitioners in Sri Lanka have been challenged to evolve approaches to mental health and psychosocial support at individual, group, community and population level in the context of limited resources and severe operational constraints. Contemporary Sri Lanka still faces the challenge of dealing with the legacy of its past as well as meeting new and emerging needs across a diverse and often vulnerable citizenry. Digital mental health approaches present many opportunities to overcome the gaps and limited reach in conventional mental health and psychosocial services in Sri Lanka, and there is a need to develop a roadmap for the development of a national strategy in this area, as well as to nurture an ecosystem that can inform both development of solutions and the necessary enabling and regulatory frameworks.
