Description

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Provincial Stepped Care Model for Mental Health and Addictions services is presented as a circle and aims to articulate the experience of an individual surrounded by care providers, accessing services throughout the mental health and addictions continuum of care. Newfoundland and Labrador has three key access points, which includes our provincial go-to mental health and addictions website nl.bridgethegapp.ca, our provincial healthline, 811, and our rapid access drop-in counselling clinic, Doorways, which is available in over 80 locations across the province. E-mental health services play an important role in the lower intensity services within the model, from Wellness Based Self Help to Group Counselling. Newfoundland and Labrador has invested significantly in a suite of e-mental health tools that are available to anyone for free within the province. Equally as significant as the tools is the investment in dedicated positions. Newfoundland and Labrador has a provincial e-mental health manager in the provincial Department of Health and Community Services, as well as five E-Mental Health Managers (one per regional Health Zone), a Provincial Virtual Groups Coordinator, and two Stepped Care Counsellor positions within the provincial health authority. These positions are uniquely positioned to help with the delivery of e-mental health services, including research, development, promotion, and training. This presentation will detail the unique roles dedicated to e-mental health in Newfoundland and Labrador, their learnings, challenges, and wins, as well as the importance in investing in e-mental health positions to increase access to mental health and addictions services.
