Digital Health Co-Design and Research: Strategies & Lessons Learned
Time
2:35 PM - 2:45 PM (EST)
Description

Background (2mins): I will briefly introduce the culturally-adapted Virtual Reality Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (VR-CBT) my research group co-developed with Inuit in Quebec. I will also briefly note the gaps& lasting impacts on mental health for Inuit. Main Presentation (5 mins): During a narrative review portion, I will talk about our experiences during the trial and review the DMH literature. What are some of the challenges affecting researchers and treatment-seeking populations? What are some opportunities for solutions? For instance, are we reinventing the wheel with DMH programs and how do we ascertain quality and equity are standardized? I will follow this with a thematic analysis of open-ended questions, participant files, and research recollections collected over the course of our trial of a VR therapy with Inuit. I will reveal key points on practical implementation, cultural sensitivity, and equity concerns. For example, what helped and hampered our ability to engage stakeholders and maximize therapeutic benefits to participants? Conclusion (3 mins): I will end with recommendations for researchers doing DMH research with marginalized populations.
