Description

Title of Keynote:  How digital is helping realise the mass public benefit of evidence-based psychological therapies: lessons from the English experience.

Keynote Abstract: Effective psychological therapies have been developed for most mental health problems. The public shows a preference for psychotherapy over medication. However, in most countries, the majority of people cannot access effective psychological therapy. This talk outlines the history and development of the English NHS Talking Therapies for Anxiety and Depression (formerly known as “IAPT”) program and its international derivatives. The program has made cognitive-behaviour therapies and other psychological treatments for anxiety disorders and depression much more widely available.  Over 670,000 people receive a course of treatment each year. Outcome data, which is available for 99% of treated patients, is publicly reported and used to: 1) improve overall outcomes and 2) reduce inequalities. Currently, approximately 50% of patients fully recover and around 7 in every 10-show significant improvement. Digital solutions are playing an increasingly large role by improving access for difficult to reach groups; facilitating initial assessments; enhancing engagement; collecting outcome data; providing multiple cost-effective ways to deliver treatment (video sessions, internet therapies, virtual reality); and facilitating post-treatment follow-up.  The benefits of therapy are widespread. In addition to improving a patient’s mental health, the NHS Talking Therapies program reduces other physical healthcare costs. It helps grow national economies in the countries where the general approach has been implemented.
