Name
Empowering Peer Support Through Digital Tools: Connection, Ethics, and Lived Experience
Time
11:20 AM - 11:30 AM (EST)
Description

Digital innovations, including AI, apps, and online platforms, are rapidly transforming mental health services. As these technologies evolve, it is critical that peer support, grounded in authentic human connection and shared lived experience, remains central. This presentation offers a practical and values-driven exploration of how digital tools can be ethically and thoughtfully integrated to enhance (not replace) peer support. It highlights the importance of maintaining human connection at the core of healing and recovery. Drawing on peer support expertise and lived experience, the session will explore: -The current landscape: how individuals with lived experience are already using digital tools for healing, reflection, and connection. -Opportunities for peer supporters: how digital platforms can support advocacy, self-awareness, community engagement, and informed decision-making. -Critical ethical considerations: including privacy, bias, equity, and the risks of over-reliance or harm through misapplication. -Lived experience leadership: why the voices of those with lived experience must guide digital innovation to ensure tools are relevant, inclusive, and rooted in real needs. -Actionable recommendations: for developers, practitioners, and policymakers to responsibly integrate digital tools in ways that expand the reach and deepen the impact of peer support. Attendees will leave with a nuanced understanding of how digital innovation can be a powerful tool within peer support ecosystems, when used with intentionality, transparency, and respect for lived experience. This session invites critical reflection on how innovation can compliment, not compromise, the values at the heart of peer support.
