Closing the Digital Divide: Equipping Children to Thrive Mentally and Meaningfully in Online Worlds
Time
11:30 AM - 11:40 AM (EST)
Description

Digital connectivity plays a crucial role in building children's skills development and supporting their mental health. By providing access to a wealth of educational resources and interactive learning platforms including MHPSS evidence-based information and resources, digital connectivity enhances children's cognitive and social skills. It fosters creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities through engaging and interactive content. Additionally, digital tools can offer mental health support by providing access to counseling services, mental health apps, and online communities where children can seek help and share their experiences. However, it is essential to balance screen time and ensure that digital interactions are positive, safe and constructive to prevent potential negative impacts on mental health. When used responsibly, digital connectivity can contribute to children's holistic development and mental well-being. This session will present new research and practical examples from UNICEF's global mental health digital portfolio, highlighting ways to increase connectivity, belonging, and positive mental health for all children. It will address how digital exclusion compounds vulnerability, especially for children in humanitarian or low-resource contexts, explore why the gap in co-creating digital solutions with children and young people, particularly in non-English-speaking or Global South settings, remains significant, and stress the important role of public-private partnerships in enabling inclusive digital mental health ecosystems.
